I'm a former astrophysicist with a long-standing interest in computers and computer programming. I recently gave up academic research to pursue a career in software development.
I got my PhD from the University of Edinburgh in 2003. My thesis research - undertaken in the Institute for Astronomy - involved the development of semi-analytic techniques for modelling galaxy formation and evolution.
Between 2003 and 2008 I worked as a postdoctoral researcher, first in JILA at the University of Colorado at Boulder and then at the Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon in Lyon, France. My research involved using state-of-the-art computer simulations to study the formation of galaxies and large-scale structure in the Universe. You can read more about it on my astronomy pages (coming soon).
At the end of 2008 I made the decision to leave academic research and pursue a career in software development. In the autumn I'll be starting a Masters in Computing at the University of Cardiff.
